Biography

Jean Lemieu was born in Quebec in 1946. His love for art began at a young age. At the age of 9, he attended the Saturday Workshops at the École des Beaux-arts de Québec.

He continued his artistic education and completed a bachelor’s degree in graphic communications. He subsequently became a lecturer at the School of Visual Arts at Laval University where he taught illustration. At the same time, he founded his screen-printing workshop and, for nearly 15 years, produced his own works and interpreted those of several renowned artists.

Since 1997, he has worked exclusively in watercolor and oil on canvas. He constantly explores color plays, which allow all the luminosity of the painted subjects to shine through.

An unconditional lover of nature and his hometown, Lemieu, through his works, takes plots of games or characters and transforms them into unusual daily references. An image without a name has no story for him, and quickly falls flat. It is therefore important to pay special attention to the titles of his works when focusing on Lemieu’s scenes. In collusion with the image, they naturally give rise to humor which transforms the context of the subject. Finally, Lemieu’s works are pretexts to develop our own imagination in order to complete the story begun.

Lemieu left us on April 19, 2011, at the age of 65.
