Biography

Narcisse Poirier was born in 1883 and passed away in 1984 at the respectable age of 101 years. The famous artist from Quebec charmed the country with his realistic paintings depicting religious or still life themes. He made his first steps in the art world at the age of eight, already drawing portraits of people who would visit his family’s house in Saint-Félix-de-Valois.?

He began his studies in 1899 at the Monument National de Montréal under the teaching of Edmond Dyonnet. In 1920, he spent nine months in France to perfect his art at the Academy Julian in Paris. During his years of training, Narcisse Poirier has been a part of the group of painters of La Montée Saint-Michel in Montreal in which he stayed for over 30 years.?

His artistic career expanded in 1922 when the government of Quebec bought one of his paintings. In 1925 he exhibited his works at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and at the Galerie Morency. He was part of several exhibitions at the sculptor Alfred Laliberté’s studio. His works have also entered the collections of the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts. He frequently traveled the region of Charlevoix alongside Suzor-Coté and Clarence Gagnon. In 1970, he exhibited at the embassy of Canada in Washington and received enormous praise from the art critic of Washington Star.
