Biography

Born in Greece in 1926, Paul Soulikias undertook art studies in Athens and then continued them in Paris where he mainly worked in drawing.

He settled in Canada in 1959, at 33 years old. It was in the mid-1960s that he was discovered by Canadian art lovers. His career began at the dawn of his forties when he won a prize at an exhibition organized by the city of Montreal. His winning painting is a landscape of the Laurentians, a region that he will then return to paint as soon as he has the chance.

From 1971 to 1981, the Art Français gallery presented six exhibitions of works by Soulikias. It is this series of exhibitions that made him known to collectors in Quebec.

Best known as a landscape painter, he also painted numerous still lifes. His sense of composition is remarkable, he knows how to strip down a subject, reducing its masses and details to the essentials. Furthermore, Soulikias can indulge, in a restricted and very particular chromatic register, with a few fanciful touches reflecting the freedom of expression which characterizes the majority of his works.

Paul Soulikias has exhibited in Canada and Greece. His works appear in numerous Canadian, American and European collections.
