Born in 1900 in Wigan, England, he moved to Winnipeg, Canada in 1912. He studied at the Winnipeg Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of Frank H. Johnston (R.C.A.), a member of the famous Group of Seven. He moved briefly to the United States to study at the Federal School of Design in 1918 and at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1924 to 1927.
He came back to Canada and explored Northern Canada on a canoe with Nicholas de Grandmaison.

During that period, he has drawn many sketches depicting the wonders of the landscapes of North Canada.

Lionel Fielding-Downes enrolled in the Canadian army from 1951 to 1953. After these three years, he moved back to New York where he stayed for a while. During that time he studied at the New York Art Student’s League. Throughout his career, he exhibited in prestigious galleries in Europe, in the US and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Canada.

He passed away on the 28th of December 1972 in Sainte-Foy, Québec.
