Biography

Born in Montreal in 1940, Marcel Ravary studied at the Fine Arts School of Montreal. He was involved in several artistic fields, like scene direction and stage setting before he started his full-time career as a landscape artist in 1970.
He became a storyteller, depicting the everyday life surrounding him in Montreal and showing with humour and realism the scenes coming to life in the streets and alleys of his neighbourhood. His small landscapes remind us, by their sizes, of postcards. His pictorial treatment is as spontaneous as it is sensitive and colours vibrate harmoniously on his paintings. His work evokes memories and shows us the traces left by men. An architectural presence, urban or rural, can be noticed throughout his work. The urban scenes let Ravary explore the various architectural movements just as much as the people moving through the city. The artist makes us feel the atmosphere coming from the scene and the activities happening. His work shows us life in various forms and expresses undeniable energy.
