Marc Grandbois is a Quebec artist renowned for his ability to capture the essence of natural landscapes with a rare emotional intensity. Born with an artistic sensibility nurtured from childhood by his rural environment and the banks of the river in Mauricie, he pursued studies in visual arts at Concordia University, where he graduated in 1991. In 2010, he settled in L’Anse-Saint-Jean, in the Saguenay region, an area that would become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his work.
Starting as a watercolorist, Grandbois gained recognition in the 1990s for the finesse of his work with light and transparency. He later expanded his practice to acrylic painting, a medium that allows him to further explore material, texture, and gesture. His artistic approach is based on plein-air painting, a method that leads him to create directly in nature, in constant dialogue with the elements. His style lies at the crossroads of contemporary impressionism and gestural expressionism. He does not seek to faithfully reproduce reality, but to translate its energy, movement, and emotion. His brushstrokes are dynamic, his palette is vibrant, and his compositions exude a visual force that transcends mere representation. Each canvas thus becomes a sensory experience, an immersion in the changing light, the winds, the tides, or the forests of Quebec.
His work demonstrates a deep connection with the land, which he tirelessly explores. The boreal forest and its peat bogs, the Saguenay Fjord, and the banks of the St. Lawrence are the dominant subjects of his pictorial approach. His works are included in numerous private and public collections in Quebec and internationally.
Marc Grandbois is a painter of life, breath, and light. Through his paintings, he invites us to see the landscape differently: not as a setting, but as a vibrant being, in perpetual transformation.
