Umberto Bruni was born in Montreal. Beginning at the age of 13 he started to study murals and stained glass works. For eight years, from 1930 to 1938, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. During his long career which spanned many decades he experimented with all kinds of techniques and media.

In 1939, he became a teacher at Querbes Outremont Academy and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1947 to 1969. He was the director and curator of the UQAM gallery of Fine Art. Umberto Bruni travelled much in Europe and both North and South America. These voyages gave him the opportunity to see nature in all its splendour and visit the grand museums of the world as well as hone his skills. He gave exhibitions of his works in Rome and in Paris, he was awarded a grant from the Canadian Council on the Arts and the Minister of Cultural Affairs of Québec.

Bruni became an Honorary Member of the Institute of Figurative Arts (IAF) in 1988.
