Claude Langevin, a self-taught landscape artist, was born in Montréal in 1942. Following in his father’s and older brother’s footsteps he began his studies in medicine at the university of Montréal, but he left after a year to seek a career in art. He travelled across Québec and presented his own interpretation of the world through his use of colour and composition. Nature was his muse – he loved the mountains, and he captured the Laurentians on many occasions. He remained faithful to the Charlevoix region in Québec.
In the beginning he would use a palette knife and acrylic paints to create his work, however upon discovering the work of Tom Thomson and Clarence Gagnon, he favoured the brush and oil paint. For more than four decades, he continued to use these media to capture scenes of country villages in Québec and the Maritimes. Following in the tradition of the Group of Seven, he painted on location to best render the scene on canvas.
Langevin made it his mission to preserve the picturesque beauty of Québec. We can see and feel a certain nostalgia in his work which is a part of many private and public collections.
