Biography

Louise Martineau was born in 1952 in Château-Richer (suburb area of Québec), near Île d’Orléans. She has spent her childhood there, surrounded by nature and tall trees, her favourite companions.

Louise Martineau studied psychology at Concordia University in Montréal and then came back to her hometown of Québec, where she worked as a teacher for many years.

Towards the end of the 70s, after many years of pictorial research, Louise meets with other artists who help her master her art. This period bears fruit; with her talent, her hard work and her will to always push things further, the artist quickly establishes herself in the Québec art community. In the beginning of the 90s, she holds her first solo exhibition as a professional artist, which coincides with the start of her career as a full-time artist. Since then, she has exhibited her work in important events in Québec, Montréal, Edmonton and Victoria. Her work is now part of permanent exhibitions in different galleries throughout Canada.

As a landscape artist, Louise Martineau channels her interest for nature through her love for drawing and painting. She is always traveling the coast of the Saint Lawrence, between Québec and Charlevoix, passing by Île d’Orléans, to find her inspiration. She paints sketches outside, directly in front of the scenes she wants to depict, and then works from these sketches in her studio to make her final pieces.

Inspired by the rural heritage, Louise Martineau’s work often features stylish country houses, elegant countryside estates and ancestral roads where we can reminisce of a comforting Sunday getaway. Everywhere, tall trees tower over the landscapes. This theme is always present in her work. Autumnal maple trees, majestic oaks, wild cherry trees and willows are the central elements of these peaceful havens. These trees are a reminder of the artist’s happy childhood which she celebrates in her work. Finally, the brightness of the light and the warmth that emanates from her compositions depict the strength of character and the energy of the person who painted them.

Her touch is spontaneous and generous, showing her love for bright colours. All these elements give her work a refreshing touch where we can feel the rhyme and harmony.
