Born on November 8, 1945, in Clermont, in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, Christian Bergeron is a Canadian painter whose career spans more than fifty years. A self-taught artist, he demonstrated remarkable aptitude for figurative art from a very young age and chose early on to devote his life entirely to painting. He has earned his living exclusively from his art since the age of 20.
Throughout his career, he refined his artistic language through contact with prominent Quebec master painters, notably Francesco Iacurto, of whom he was both a student and a model. Influenced by the Impressionists and recognized for his profound understanding of color, Bergeron developed over the decades a distinctive personal approach he calls the prismatic style.
This unique method creates the illusion of a scene perceived through a prism, where light and perspective shift according to the viewer’s angle and the time of day, producing vibrant, almost kaleidoscopic effects. His prismatic approach has been the subject of academic analysis, notably by William Berg (University of Wisconsin) in La littérature et la peinture au Québec: de l’image à l’identité.
Working exclusively with a palette knife, Bergeron is known for his vibrant colors, bold contrasts, dramatic light effects, and the expressive power of his compositions. His body of work encompasses a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, traditional scenes, seascapes, luminous backlit compositions, figurative works, and more contemporary, even abstract explorations.
Highly prolific, he has painted thousands of works over the course of his career, many of which are inspired by Charlevoix — a region to which he remains deeply connected.
Christian Bergeron is a member of the Institut des Arts Figuratifs and became an Associate Member of the Copley Society of Arts in Boston in 2007, where he exhibits regularly. His works are presented in galleries across Canada, the United States, and Europe, and are included in prestigious private and corporate collections, including Gaz Métropolitain, Pratt & Whitney, Canam Manac, Donohue, Laurentian Bank, Royal Trust, The Jim Pattison Group (Vancouver), Le Manoir Richelieu, the Fort Garry Hotel, and Desjardins.
Today, at over 75 years of age, Christian Bergeron continues to actively pursue his artistic practice. His instantly recognizable prismatic style and his ongoing exploration of light and emotion have established him as a distinguished painter, contributing to the cultural prominence of Charlevoix and Quebec on the national and international art scene.
